MA Virtual Catalog Outstanding Problems:

Problem: Emails seem to be going out to patrons, but other types of emails do not seem to be going out.
  Symptoms:

Emails to request cancellation of holds in local systems, emails to libraries to announce unfilled and expired requests not going out.

Status: Tech staff is still working on the problem and trying to diagnose it.
Reporting: Not necessary.
Workaround: Only patrons with no email addresses in requests will not be notified of cancelled and expired requests directly. Cancellation notices for local holds' not going out will cause libraries to see pick slips for items that no longer have VC requests but searching "set Not Available" list for title if VC gives "no request to ship" will show title not there - this should help.

Problem: (Resolved) Virtual Catalog staff menu shows no buttons
  Symptoms:

Staff menu shows left hand yellow frame and words "Staff Menu" but the "Search", "Ship", "Receive" and all other buttons are missing.

Status:

Resolved: 1PM June 26, 2007.

Problem caused by space on server becoming filled by URSA transaction logs; solution: logs reduced by the vendor in size

Reporting: Call or email helpdesk if this happens again: server logs may need to be reduced.
Workaround: None

Problem: (Resolved) Virtual Catalog not accessible in staff or patron mode April 16-17 2007
  Symptoms:

Browser message (for Firefox) “Unable to connect: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at ursa.lib.umb.edu…” IE message: “The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.”

Status:

Resolved: 5PM April 17 2007.

Problem caused by uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit.

Reporting: Various emails and called to helpdesk;; no need to report now, problem fixed. In future email or call helpdesk.
Workaround: None needed; problem resolved.

Problem: Internet Explorer 7 causes yellow frame at left to creep across the screen. Started Fall 2006
  Symptoms:

Each time a button is clicked the yellow frame on left replicates, eventually obscuring the screen.

Status:

Solved 1/18/2007. No action needed by libraries.

Problem: “Page cannot be displayed” message when logging in as staff.
  Symptoms:

Problem does not last long; it goes away after a few minutes or hours. Staff login from www.massvc.org causes "page cannot be displayed" but login to ip address brings message showing server is available.

update: as of 3/7/2007 no more reports have been heard of this since around February 9, when the UMASS Boston campus IT department fixed a problem with the local network. Please report any new instances of this to the helpdesk as reported below. Thanks!

Call helpdesk 617-287-5926 or email; mention your library name. It is important to collect instances of this happening to aid in diagnosis so please call even if the problem goes away by itself.

Workaround: Try logging in a half an hour later.

Problem: Request Inquiry list is out of numeric order. Started December 29 2006 after installation of patch for 13 digit ISBNs.
  Symptoms:

Picking a list of requests in Request Inquiry function such as "all requests made to your library" results in a list out of order by request number making it hard to track.

Status:

Unsolvable without major software fix by vendor; fixed iin URSA 4.1.

Reporting:

-

Workaround: Make list shorter by using status pull down box to limit requests to "PENding", "SHPped" etc. This makes reading out of order easier..
